Probate

The word ‘probate’ refers to the management of a person’s estate after they have died. It involves the distribution of their assets (property, money and possessions) and the settling of any debts.
Most people use a professional probate provider to manage the process. However, a minority of families apply for probate themselves.

Before making this decision, you should be aware that some areas of the probate process are complex and it should not be taken lightly. For a typical estate, probate will normally take between six and nine months to complete.

These pages give you an overview of what’s involved, so that you can make up your mind.
