Benefits and financial support

There are three main types of bereavement benefit available.

  • Bereavement Payment
  • Widowed Parents' Allowance
  • Bereavement Allowance

All of these benefits must be claimed within three months of the death.

Bereavement Payment

This is a single tax-free sum of £2,000 payable after your husband, wife or civil partner has died.

This benefit depends on your age and the national insurance contributions of your spouse or civil partner.

Widowed Parents' Allowance and Bereavement Allowance

It is only possible to claim one of these two benefits - either Widowed Parents' Allowance or Bereavement Allowance

These benefits can be claimed by a bereaved spouse or civil partner.

Eligibility depends on the age of the claimant, the age of dependent children and the national insurance history of the person who has died.
